This is one of my favorite chairs from my grandma’s house. She had two that matched. I loved the interesting shape and the wood trim but, as a little girl, my favorite part was the soft, quilted velveteen upholstery. When I was tired while visiting my grandma, I would curl myself into the rounded back and rest because I was small enough to fit and it felt so soft and snuggly. These chairs were also my favorite place to sit when our whole family sat together in the living room to visit in the evenings. After my grandma passed these charming chairs went to my aunt and uncle’s house and eventually were taken to their cabin. Every time I visit their cabin I spend a little time sitting in one of the chairs, running my hands along the curved sides and the smooth wood, feeling the softness of the apricot velveteen. On our last visit to the cabin with my mom before she passed, she told me these chairs I had only known in apricot velveteen, had once been a dark teal. Now looking at pictures from my mom in high school I see the chairs as they were, their shape unmistakable. She told me when the upholstery was so worn it needed to be replaced, my grandma liked the chairs so much that rather than replace them she had them reupholstered in the apricot velveteen. I sat in one at the cabin and, once again, ran my hands over the soft fabric as she told me about how much care she and my grandma took in selecting the right color and feel. I think they got it just right.
