I’d never seen or even heard about persimmons until I lived in Oakland, California. I saw them at my beloved Berkeley Bowl one day and wondered what these bright orange beauties could be. I thought they might be some variation of tomato I’d never heard of but they were near the citrus and Asian pears, not the tomatoes, so I knew that couldn’t be right. Over the next couple of years I learned they were mostly an Asian fruit. My dad had eaten them when he lived in Japan and many other friends knew about them after spending time in Asian countries. As it turns out, while they’re beautiful, I don’t especially love the taste or texture. Still, every winter when they arrive at the market I look forward to seeing their vivid colors amid the yellows and browns of lemons and Asian pears.

“Persimmons No. 1” is a 12x16 inch, original oil painting on 1/4 inch panel. It is sold unframed.
