We’ve lived seven different places since having kids and none had space for a chair in any of their tiny rooms until we built this house. Growing up with a chair or small couch in my room as long as I can remember, this was a problem to me. I wanted to be able to sit and snuggle with my little ones at bedtime or sit and visit with my older kids anytime they were willing like my mom had been able to with me. I knew the new rooms would finally have the space I wanted so as we finished building the house, I let the kids each choose their own chair. Dan, a huge recliner fan, convinced the three older kids that a recliner was the way to go. I am decidedly not a fan. With very few exceptions, I hate the way they look and have never felt they were very comfortable (possibly because I despise sleeping on my back so why would I choose to recline in a chair?). I know. Apparently I am a freak in this regard. I’m okay with that. Anyway, the big kids, due to their father’s influence, all chose a recliner, but since Baby wasn’t even one when we moved in, I chose his chair, and it is, happily, not a recliner. It’s a simple, low, charcoal gray chair with a little button tufting on the backrest. When we first moved in I sat in it every night when he awoke wanting to nurse and as he grew he began to sit beside me in it while we read books together. He still runs to it for reading time any chance he gets but now it’s also used to line up matchbox cars or his latest collection of things pilfered from his siblings. It’s been a calm spot in his room which is often a wreck of discarded books and dumped toys. Just looking at it slows my heart rate and reminds me to be still and take some time with my youngest monkey before he’s all grown up.

“The Reading Corner” is 11x14x1.5 inches, oil on canvas. The painting wraps around the edges so it can be displayed unframed if desired.
