I remember sitting on this chair as a little girl in my grandma’s house. It was painted red and well-worn with much of the wood showing through. It was a chair my mom and uncle had used a children, too. I loved the simple shape of it and how the paint had worn away in interesting patterns. It came to live with us after my grandma passed and spent many years in our creepy storage room until I had kids and my brother brought it out for my kids to use when they watched a movie or colored with him. Last year my dad gave it to me and I smoothed out the rough old wood and flaking paint, and repainted it green and gray. It lives in my studio, a reminder of playing at my grandma’s house. It’s mostly used as a small step stool but it does get a bit of real use when my 3yo joins me in the studio, too. The green is much more “me” but even now, looking at it, I still see the well-loved red chair of my childhood.

“Toddler Chair” is an 11x14x1.5 inch original oil painting on canvas. The painting wraps around the edges of the canvas so it may be displayed unframed if desired.
